The “Erotic Services” Section of Craigslist has brought some major heat on Craigslist. To find out why, I’m going to take you behind the scenes to learn if the women who advertise on Craigslist are actually involved in prostitution and what they think about the possibility of Craigslist being shut down.
What is Craigslist’s “Erotic Services” Section?
Unless you’ve been hiding in a religious convent, you’ve probably heard about the “Erotic Services” section of Craigslist, which was part of a flourishing online community that features free online classified advertising. The “Erotic Services” Section has received heat from various Attorney Generals and law enforcement officials from across the country, citing the “Erotic Services” section as being a blatant purveyor of pornography and prostitution. For those of you who are like me and never use the word “purveyor” it means, “one that furnishes or supplies.” The “Erotic Services” section has also been described as a weapon used in the mass exploitation of women. There are other definitions that are too harsh, edgy, cynical and demonstrative to repeat here.
Are You Itching For a Showdown?
The lines have been drawn and now the showdown, which may lead to a tense throw down. On one side, we have the powers that be and they are adamant! They want the “Erotic Services” section of Craigslist shutdown NOW! Not tomorrow, not next week, but right now! On the other side of the showdown is Craig Newmark, the founder and brainchild of probably the most popular websites on the Internet. Craig’s position is one of symbolic of defiance. He said in an interview with Martin Bashir of ABC Nightline, that he has no plans to shut down their “Erotic Services” section.
A Clandestine Look Behind The Closed Doors of the “Erotic Services”
To give you a clear picture of what the “Erotic Services” section of Craigslist is really about, we’re going to take you behind the scenes, literally. We assembled a group of aspiring Bloggers and columnists and had them to go undercover and make that call. To which call am I referring? Calling the women who place the ads in the “Erotic Services” section of Craiglist. What they heard, saw and experienced, may shock some of you.

You’re Not The Police Are You? No Way, I’m Just Like You, Out Looking For a Hookup!
When we started calling the ads, it was clear that the women posting the ads were concerned about being setup by undercover police officers. What bothered us was the fact that they were more concerned about being nabbed by the police than they were for their personal safety. Here’s an ad with a quote, “legal disclaimer” ran by a woman who goes by the name of Ms. Juicy.

Ms. Juicy’s LEGAL DISCLAIMER For Clients From The “Erotic Services” Section of Craigslist
Disclosure: 1. This is not an illegal offer. Donations are made for time and companionship only. Anything else that may occur is a matter of choice between two consenting adults of legal age and is not contracted for, nor is it requested to be contracted for in any matter. 2. Solicitation is a crime, therefore, explicit language is forbidden. 3. I do reserve the right to decline appointments, as I deem necessary. By contacting me (either through phone or email) you agree to these terms and hereby agree that you are not part of any governmental agency using this advertisement for entrapment or for detainment. This is a contract you agree to by contacting me.
Uh, What Law School Did You Graduate From And Where Did You Pass The Bar?
When my undercover aspiring journalist passed the phone screen and set up the appointment with Ms. Juicy, he agreed to meet her at a hotel of her choice. He was told he had to have the roses in hand and they (the roses) had to pass from his hands into her hands immediately upon meeting or there was no deal. He was told there would be absolutely no discussion of roses when they meet.
Here is the interesting part, Ms. Juicy and the other women running these ads and going on these sex romps, seemed to think that their Mickey Mouse disclaimers prevented them from being arrested in a sting. When I told one woman who went by the name, “Perception” that just because a police officer doesn’t disclose that they are in fact an under cover officer, doesn’t mean they can’t arrest you for solicitation for prostitution.
She adamantly stood by her belief that if a police officer read her disclaimer and set up an appointment, there was NO WAY he could arrest her. I’m thinking to myself, “You’re kidding me, right? What, did you graduate from Harvard Law School or something?” Anyway, let’s get back to Ms. Juicy.
I’m Not Engaged in Prostitution, “I Swear On My Mothers Fake Prada!”
When my operative met Ms. Juicy at the hotel, he was astonished at her pristine beauty. She was a petite blonde with hazel eyes and a smile that could light up an entire seashore. Why would she be engaged in such a shady business? Wait till you hear her answer. Immediately upon greeting one another, as agreed he handed over HER 250 roses, (that means he gave her $250.00 cash).
This is another one of those legal beagle tactics these girls picked up at the Stephen Colbert School of Law. They somehow think that by not saying “money,” they are able to skirt being arrested for prostitution? Once again, how wrong they are. Some call it roses, others call it: kisses, splashes, rainfalls, donations, candy, etc., anything but money, dog gone it!
Once he gave her the roses, she quickly placed it in her clutch purse, led him back into the room and without any fanfare made a gracious beeline to the bed and started seductively peeling off her clothes. Remember, he only had one hour and she apparently had other clients. He said it reminded him of the scene in the movie, “Heat” when the prostitute told the ex-con named Slick, that she had to leave so she could get street side.
It was at that point that my operative revealed who he was and that this was only for educational purposes. Actually it’s hopefully for a potential movie, but we weren’t going to tell her that! Needless to say, she seemed somewhat livid and that was understandable, but her anger soon dissipated when he reminded her that he still had around fifty minutes and she could keep the money if she was willing to answer some questions.
Questions To Ask a Woman Who Posts Ads in The Erotic Services Section of Craigslist
Our first question was, “Why do this?” Ms. Juicy said she loved the money and the thrill. She was hoping to land a high paying modeling job, but at five feet and four inches, she reasoned that her short stature probably wasn’t going to allow that to happen so she opted to get in the sex trade business.
By using Craigslist, she didn’t need a pimp or an escort service and didn’t have to walk the streets. That brought us to the next question, which was, “You realize this is prostitution don’t you?” Ms. Juicy did what the other girls did when we hit them with that question. She said she was providing a service that men demand and really need and if they didn’t get it from her, they would definitely get it somewhere else.
She went on to declare how she gives them something their wives, fiancé’s and girlfriends can’t or won’t give them. She was so passionate with her delivery that she was almost believable. Actually, her response was a brilliant strategy pulled from the Jedi Mind trick school of evading answers. She never said, “yes” and she never said, “no.”
When asked what would she do if Craigslist were forced to shutdown its “Erotic Services” section, Ms. Juicy said she would hate it but she would work around it by placing ads in other publications. All of the other women we interviewed who ran ads on the “Erotic Services” section of Craigslist essentially shared the same sentiments.
Even when it came to acknowledging the reality of “quote” the, “Craigslist Killers” and the other attacks and robberies that have taken place through a Craigslist hook up, these girls were pretty much unfazed. They see those incidents as a risk of doing, “This kind of business.”
The Reality of Craiglist and Its “Erotic Services” Section
First of all, virtually every newspaper, yellow pages and most advertising spaces, have some type of erotic services section. They may call it an adult section, dating section or something else, but as the old saying goes, “A rose by any other name is still a rose.”
Secondly, going back to Craigslist, [a]. It is definitely pornographic in nature. Some or most of the pictures they post along with their ads are blatant porno. I don’t see what the argument is. But remember, the individuals, not Craigslist, place these ads. [b]. It is definitely prostitution. There is a small percentage of women who run ads and all they will provide is a legitimate massage and they are licensed and trained to do so. But, they are few and far in between. [c]. I don’t believe the founder of Craigslist, Craig Newmark, intended for this section of his online advertising dream to turn out like this; naming him as a purveyor of pornography and prostitution and being hammered by Attorney Generals and law enforcement officials!
The realty, in my humble opinion, is this; there is a certain segment of people in our society (a rather large segment) who want the type of hook ups that websites like: Craigslist, Backpages, AdultFriendfinders, OnlineBootyCalls, Myspace, Facebook, Twitter and others provide.
If one service doesn’t meet their needs, they will immediately defer to the next best service. In that regard, Ms. Juicy was right! Should Craigslist have bowed to the pressure and shutdown its “Erotic Services” Section? It depends on whom you ask!
As always, when you want to know; just Ask a Playboy!
